"Lonely Planet" 2000-01
Unless you're unlucky enough to cop (as we did) poseurs hysterically 'oh-my god'-ing each other across the communal table. Wall Two 80 can be Balaclava's most restorative hideaway. Literally a hole in the wall, this very groovy little cafe provides daytime refuge in the form of Genovese coffee. Tazo herbal teas, fresh muffins and tarts($2-$5), toasted pide with soup or various fillings ($6-$7.50), light breakfasts ($4-$4.50) and a stack of international glossies. Design fans may find plenty to admire in the renovation done here by innovative Melbourne firm Six Degrees (Wall was once the salting room of a Kosher butcher). We just loved the singular pleasure of freshly toasted pide filled with a combination of artichoke, rudely good-tasting roma tomato ($6.50), followed by a silky-and-sour slice of lemon tart (from Phillippa's of Armadale, $4.50).
